What is the Dark Web?

60-Second Summary

The Dark Web is a hidden part of the internet, accessible through tools like Tor or I2P, focusing on privacy and anonymity. Here is some general information about how to safely navigate the Dark Web:

  • Uses:
    • Legitimate: Activists, journalists, and whistleblowers use it for secure communication.
    • Illicit: Criminal activities such as selling stolen data, drugs, weapons, and malware.
  • How it works: Transactions often use cryptocurrencies to hide identities. Websites frequently appear and disappear, making law enforcement efforts challenging.
  • Risks: Malware, phishing, scams, and potential legal trouble if accessing illegal content.
  • Impact: Personal information from data breaches often ends up on the Dark Web, enabling fraud and identity theft.

AMCO’s Top Security Tips

  • Monitor your data: Use Dark Web monitoring services for alerts on your information.
  • Improve security: Keep antivirus and encryption software updated.
  • Use strong passwords: Create unique, strong passwords for each account.

What is the Dark Web and how does it work?

The small section of The Web we generally have access to is called the Surface Web. The Deep Web is far larger and less accessible and it contains private databases, academic materials, and other content that search engines do not index.

The Deep Web includes a smaller, veiled portion known as the Dark Web, which is a hidden and sometimes misunderstood corner of the internet.  Unlike the Surface Web, the Dark Web prioritizes privacy and anonymity. This makes it appealing for both legitimate and illegitimate activity.

The Dark Web is a collection of encrypted websites and online services that can only be accessed through specialist software such as Tor (The Onion Router) or I2P as these websites only use non-standard domain suffixes. This specialised program anonymises a user’s online activities, making it impossible to determine their identity or location.

What Happens on the Dark Web?

The Dark Web has a dual reputation, serving both legal and illegal purposes. On one hand, it offers a platform for individuals and groups seeking anonymity for legitimate reasons. Whistleblowers, activists, and journalists use it to communicate securely, while some companies transmit sensitive data or conduct discreet research.

On the other hand, the Dark Web is infamous for illegal activities, including:

  • Stolen Data: Sale of login credentials, personal information, and financial data like credit card numbers.
  • Illicit Goods: Marketplaces for restricted drugs and weapons.
  • Cybercrime Services: Offerings such as malware creation, ransomware kits, and hacking services.
  • Counterfeit Goods: Trade in fake documents and passports.

While much of the Dark Web is associated with crime, not all activities are illegal. Researchers and cybersecurity experts monitor its forums to track emerging cyber threats, and others use it for private communication.

How the Dark Web Operates

The Dark Web prioritises anonymity, enabling users to act without fear of surveillance. Key aspects include:

  • Cryptocurrency Use: Transactions often utilise Bitcoin, Monero, or similar currencies to conceal identities, making financial activity difficult to trace.
  • Ephemeral Websites: Dark Web markets frequently appear and vanish due to internal disputes, law enforcement pressure, or attempts to evade detection.
  • Law Enforcement Actions: Organisations like the FBI and Europol actively work to infiltrate and dismantle illicit operations, as seen in the Silk Road shutdown.

Should You Be Concerned About the Dark Web?

The Dark Web can affect anyone, as stolen personal data from breaches is often exploited by cybercriminals for fraud or identity theft. To protect yourself, regularly monitor your accounts, practise good cybersecurity by following our recommendations to keep yourself and your devices safe.

AMCO’s Recommendations

AMCO advises people and companies to take proactive steps to secure their data and equipment. To protect yourself against Dark Web-related threats:

  • Monitor your data: Use a Dark Web monitoring service to get notified if your personal or financial information has been hacked.
  • Improve Security: Keep antivirus, firewall, and encryption software up to date to prevent unwanted access.
  • Use strong passwords: Create strong, unique passwords for each account, and consider using a password manager for extra ease.Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Adding extra security to your accounts decreases the possibility of illegal access.
  • Research and keep informed: Stay informed on cybersecurity dangers and popular scams to better identify attacks.
